So my girlfriend made us some taquitos for dinner, and she guestimate whipped up this pretty good taco sauce from the ingredients list on the back of an empty pack of lawry's taco seasoning.

As im sitting there chomping down taquitos and sauce i got to thinking, and we got to pondering the origins of taco sauce.

Our reasoning was as follows:
1) We've both been to 8 bazillion "authentic" mexican food resturants.
2) The only place we've ever been served "taco sauce" is Taco Bell.

So that leads me to my theory:

"Taco Sauce" is an American invention, probably by Taco Bell, and probably does not exist outside of the United States.

Can we get any "real" mexicans in here to confirm or invalidate my theory?
